thirsting for luncheon came the kentish vermare
spitting current from antennae and spittle from jowl
she tracked a mouse over the weald and the wood
but fried it too much for considering it food

now see her chase magpies and tilt at the cows
but when she laid hold of a bullock in fire
she made it beyond toast with her crackling wire
not much could she eat, this carnivore foulsome
not much was there with her that she could devour
for all that she caught she would reduce to a carbon
and with no taste for ash the vermare hungered on
she found a red nutkin and made it a shadow
she dispersed the parts of a rabbiting fox
the swan she remembered to aim at the water
and twenty fish embers did float to the sky
stripped of her energy, bereft of composure
yet unable to stall her lightning’s ferocity
the vermare laid her head down to perish unfed
and the glow round her antennae reduced to a pall
then ten sacred dancers appeared right before her
and danced the sad dance that is shown to the doomed
the vermare lightly sobbed and knew it was over
and with her last breath she vaporised a brock
so take heed my child, of terrible fortune
for if you have powers akin to this beast
be sparing with current, be light with the voltage
and you won’t starve to death as you burn all your food
