like we’re two-legged tumours
or a crowd of children
faces full of candy
until the bowl’s empty
then we crash
but news flash

most can’t afford
to make ends meet
the cost of living
costs hands and feet
yet i still don’t get
what stands between us
and a ten-hour week?

jobs and work
have become separate notions
pushed through school
into an unemployment pool
desperate enough
to jump to attention
when you offer a zero-hour
con… tract

and yeah, i eat store-bought groceries
live on electricity
i consume sh-t from the system
and sometimes it consumes me
don’t have to live in a cave
to express distaste
for the way things are

but my convenience
ain’t the point of pertinence
i won’t say what’s okay
and what’s luxury, just that maybe

we wouldn’t be so short of sh-t
if it weren’t for half of it
being wasted and the rest
controlled by private interests
