letra de seasons - tj washburn

summer came back this week on tuesday
the neighbors are dancing in the melted-snow street
we live in shacks and it’s a dark news day
but they’re all just grateful to stand in the heat

joyful old women sitting on stools
teenagers cursing and men washing cars
water with lemon drunk by a fool
who’d rather be somewhere else playing guitar

a moment in time separate from me
a box made of glass from which i watch the world
a few words that rhyme, the chance to feel free
the truth in a phrase or a feeling unfurled

my father is dead, my mother is not
my brothers are angry and i am away
lost in my head, chasing a thought
talking to no one with nothing to say

but learning is breathing and growing is slow
and the signposts that mark it are subtle and rare
and if i don’t see them, then how will i know?
will i just look up and find myself there?

i’m scared to waste whatever days i have left
i’m scared i might reach the end not having known
dreams that i chased left me bereft
dreaming is easy, but i do it alone
changes in air don’t change my heart
wednesday i was who i was all along
half of a pair of makers of art
who yells at who loves him and treats people wrong

and i’ve no more words, never mind phrases
i’ve no more notes that could fill out this tune
people are birds and seasons are phases
fly south for the winter, fly home someday soon
