letra de crow feathers - the pine box boys

[narration]
that song stuck in jubal’s head, and the more he thought about it the more he was sure it was about his mama, and that whoever had writ that song was the one who had done it, and he just changed some things around

by the way, here’s a decorating hint for those of you throwing your own feast of three arms: crow feathers. lots of ’em, all over the place. mama used to shoot crows from her swing on the porch. she’d fire off a load of number four shot and the recoil would set her a-swinging, and she’d send one of us boys out to collect the dead ones, dip ’em in boiling water, and pluck all those black feathers. she’d save ’em up all year long. well they look right nice as decorations

and i told you that to tell you this, you see: the crow in that cage, well, i wouldn’t say he put them bad ideas in jubal’s head, but he sure sorta pushed him along, he did. little nudges in the wrong direction

so like if the boy said, “you think i should steal some apples off of that tree?”

that crow would just say, “yeah, i’d do that.”

or: “you reckon i ought to let them hogs out of that pen,” or maybe “cuss that schoolmarm,” or do some other meanness?

that crow would just say, “yeah, i’d do that.”

well after jubal thought about that song, he asked the crow one question, and that crow told him, “yeah, i’d do that.”

well it’s interesting to know that the bad who had the misfortune of playing that song was the hollins & hollins funeral home good time jamboree band. and that’s a doomed marketing gimmick, not just because it was poorly conceived — which it was, their slogan, “we’ll be the last ones to let you down,” was seen as being in poor taste — but also because they were bonafide doomed, and they themselves would soon be in need of their own sponsored services…
