about growing up, knowing you had nothing
and working your -ss off to make sure you get something

and you wanna be worth something when all is done

some find the truths, some fall for lies

born and raised in new york, new york
was brought home in a cab, life ain’t got no storks
he was 10 when his moms had a heart attack
and his dad was no help, he was hitting the crack
so
all alone, no other place to go
depressed, he really was at an all time low
but then
in 8th grade he took a poetry cl-ss
wrote his first rap, got an a and he p-ssed
he asked, “what is this light that shines in the dark?
if i reach out for it, will it give me the spark
that i need to ignite the flames in my heart.”
and so he sought out, to master this new art
and many more years p-ssed, and many more raps written
cause he didn’t want to taste the dust that his dad’s bitten
and many of those raps were constantly rewritten
until they were good enough to leave a whole crowd smittened

now 42, he is much more grown
worked for 6 labels, two that he owned
life is going good, he’s no longer alone
he has a beautiful wife, and three kids of his own
every now and then, he gets lost in his thoughts
how he got to where he was cause of the battles he’s fought
against depression, the odds and the lack of a real parent
but rap and his will saved him, that much was apparant
once every year, he goes to his mom’s grave
and tells her how he has cut down the darkness with his glaive
and never again shall he dwell in dismay
as he looks forward to seeing each and every new day
