they met when they worked at the same place
became friends and soon a relationship took shape
the same goals, same views on life and the same age

he was hindu, she was sikh, they didn’t think about it

never once did he consider taking her to meet his mum
but months turned to years
they were happy but this is where they went wrong

i guess he never thought about the consequence
but now it’s been a couple years she’s getting onto him
she wants the families to meet and take the next steps
become official, get married, what you’d expect
and there’s where all the problems start
he’s scared to tell his parents how he let it get this far
he knows they’ll be against it so he’s making up excuses
finding every reason in the world that he can’t do it
she’s tryna reassure him
told him that she loves him and his parents do
and no matter their beliefs they’ll want the best for you
so don’t be scared, i’m by your side and i’ll be here for life
and our parents will agree if we’re both down to fight
so she sat her parents down and told ’em everything
she was surprised, they were fine as long as she was happy
told her that she has their blessing but they wanna meet him
and if that works then they wanna go and meet his family
now she’s ecstatic, told him and he starts to panic
it’s now or never, be a man, there ain’t no time to plan it
so now he’s thinking bout the ways that he can say it
and the pressure’s building up, he don’t know how he can play it
so she’s worried, don’t know if he’s committed
and furthermore she’s gone two months without her period
then she goes and takes five tests for confirmation
and breaks down in tears, it’s just another complication
they don’t just share relations, they’re gonna share a child
but she can’t tell him now cause he’ll probably run a mile
she keeps it to herself, strong woman with a smile
see a woman like this only comes once in a while
now let me switch the focus, while he’s procrastinating
unbeknown to him his girlfriend’s pregnant with his baby
his mum has heard some rumours that he’s got himself a lady
that ain’t from the same community and now she’s going crazy
so she confronts her son and asks “how could you shame me?
bought you into this world and this is how you repay me?
i’d rather k!ll myself than let you bring another culture in this home
and i told you from a child, we only deal with our own”
so he’s conflicted, his mother or his missus?
and now she’s mentioned suicide he doesn’t wanna risk it
but he ain’t got the heart to tell his girl about what happened
or go against his parents, his problems overlapping
so now he’s feeling trapped
on one hand, well he found himself the perfect woman
and now he’s thinking things he didn’t do and probably should’ve
like he should’ve been more honest and not waste her time
i mean he knew his parents’ stance, he could’ve saved some time
now i’d like to say the story’s got a happy ending
but feeling like a let down, decided he should end it
he took his own life that night
left his girl, his parents and his child that night
be careful what you preach
because not everything that we’ve been taught we’ve gotta teach
we’re all of one race, we’re all of one kind
but how many times will outdated values cost a life?
