my fellow singaporeans, good evening. five weeks ago, i spoke to you on our covid-19 situation

much has happened since then

we have actually been preparing for a situation like this ever since we had sars in 2003, 17 years ago. we have built up our institutions, our plans, our facilities, our stockpiles, our people, our training because we knew that one day something like that would happen again

this new coronavirus, which has become a very serious problem in china, and as who has recognized as an international medical emergency

so far we have done well in terms of catching the cases which have come in, but we have to continue to be vigilant

so, we are doing everything that we can. i think there is every reason to be watchful, but there is also every reason to be confident

you don’t need a mask to go around singapore, or to be at work if you are well. because there is no community spread of the virus and the mask gives you a false sense of security. because most of the time, you don’t get the virus from breathing it in, you get it from contact
i think if we work together, uhh we can overcome this challenge
so it is timely to update you again, and share with you what we can expect down the road

i will speak about three aspects of the issue: medical, economic and psychological
each time we have been able to isolate them, do contact tracing, and quarantine the close contacts
china’s situation is stabilising, this outbreak will continue for some time – a year, and maybe longer
we have all along taken covid-19 with the utmost seriousness
held singapore up as an example to emulate

there are baseline things that we must get used to, like practising good personal hygiene, adopting new social norms and discouraging large gatherings, and generally, maintaining some physical distance from one another
we need to plan for a possible spike in covid-19 cases
we need to plan for a possible spike in covid-19 cases
that’s why we already scaled down community activities, especially for the seniors
and we can do more in other areas
i hope singaporeans understand that during this period we may need to shorten religious services, or reduce our attendance at such gatherings

and the ones who are most at risk are the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions

with larger numbers, the sensible thing will be to hospitalise only the more serious cases, and encourage those with mild symptoms to see their family gp and rest at home – isolate themselves

isolate themselves
isolate themselves
rest at home, rest at home
isolate themselves
rest at home, rest at home

rest assured, any singaporean who needs urgent medical care, whether for covid-19 or other illnesses, will be taken care of
this way, we focus resources on the seriously ill, speed up our response time, and hopefully, minimise the number of fatalities
the extra brakes will slow down transmission of the virus, prevent our healthcare system from being overwhelmed, and help bring the numbers back down

the situation in singapore remains under control
that’s why we did the 4 billion dollar support and stabilisation package in the budget last month
so the government is working on a second package of measures
we will help our workers keep their jobs!
an extra helping hand to see through this difficult period

i’m sharing these plans with you to reassure you that we are on top of things, and thinking ahead
i’m confident that we can deal with them
our frontline staff, singaporeans are cheering them on
the government has been open and transparent with our plans

don’t worry about our supermarkets
running out of food or household items
don’t worry about our supermarkets
running out of food or household items

i’m grateful that most singaporeans are responding calmly and responsibly

thank you for your trust and support
we have confidence in each other
we feel that we are all in this together
and we do not leave anyone behind. (anyone behind, anyone behind)

this is sg united
we are sg united
