and its not like i didn’t know how heavy iron was
it’s just i knew not the true weight of iron until it acquainted itself with my wrist
the way it kept shifting against my flesh
writing a name that wasn’t my own
and it’s not like i can’t fight, i’ve fought many battles
this blood knows the soil well, it’s just that it’s never seen the sea like this before
the salt of tears keeps mixing in with the currents
the depth of this fear i have is unknown
and this darkness is just like when they came
shrouded in its embrace they stole me
shackled me and called me slave
i called myself something else before that
i don’t remember
but what i do remember
is that when i was taught how to fight, i was taught a practice to endure pain
to grow accustom to it
fall like a tree
face forward and fall without my arms out to protect me… fall
these men consider themselves to be lumberjacks
and they’re very capable with their axes
they’ve knocked many branches from a great canopy
but i will not fall like a tree again
rather than becoming a leaf for the wind to control at it’s whim
i became a stone and i skipped into the ocean
