i would do anything for her
except for what i won’t
not much that i won’t

sugar cubes and rock salt
we ante up, then we default
the boredom that her eyes convey
atheists who kneel and pray
rising waves and ebbing tides
holding hands on coaster rides
black and white, mix to grey
there will be other days

i can say anything to her

today, this kid, he came into my office
wondering how to ask a girl out
said she was the kind of pretty
to scare the words away

i said “drop the briefcase, grab a cup of coffee
