it was a hot day in sinoia, and i’d just done a show
i was talking to the children, outside the town hall door
and something made me turn around, there stood this little chap, with sergeant stripes and a uniform, and a little soldiers cap
i said sonny what’s your name?
and with a twinkle in his eye
he turned and gave me a smart salute and said i’m sergeant guy
told me that his father, was somewhere out there in the war
and this is what he said to me, when i asked him to tell me some more
i sometimes miss my dad at night, and the stories he tells me
but he’s been gone a month or so, protecting our country
but mom and i, we manage fine, but sometimes she looks sad
and i wish that he was home right now but the army needs my dad
one day i’ll be a troopie, protecting my fair land
with a camo jacket just like dad’s and a rifle in my hand
and i’m going to be the greatest, when the turrs are coming near
but mom says i must wait awhile cause i’m only right next year
we’ll go fishing on my birthday, and my friends will come along
and when the campfire is burning dad will sing his troopie songs
and mom’s not looking sad no more, cause the phone call came today
it was my troopie hero, and he says he’s on his way
