[intro]
“now, the great watershed for our nation, of course, was the civil war. and the civil war, there are dozens and dozens of great songs. but there’s one song which … really is the great symbol of the civil war, especially for the north.”

[verse 1]
john brown’s body lies a-moldering in the grave
john brown’s body lies a-moldering in the grave
john brown’s body lies a-moldering in the grave
but his soul goes marching on

[chorus]
glory, glory, hallelujah
glory, glory, hallelujah
glory, glory, hallelujah
and his soul goes marching on
[spoken interlude]
“now, john brown was a white man. religious fanatic. he believed slavery was against god’s law. he said, ‘we’re gonna free the slaves. i’m gonna go down with my men down to harper’s ferry, virginia, to the great -rs-nal there. we’ll get the guns, give ‘em to the slaves, shoot the masters, end slavery.’ first part worked alright—captured the -rs-nal in harper’s ferry. but before he could get those guns out, along came the virginia militia headed by one colonel robert e. lee, the very same. robert e. lee captured john and his few men and he said, ‘john brown, what is your purpose?’ john brown looked him in the eye and he said, ‘my purpose, sir, is to free the slaves.’ now, you have to remember robert e. lee was west point, so the next question, obviously, was, ‘by whose authority?’ john brown looked him in the eye and he said, ‘by the authority of almighty god.’ well, the historians will tell you that robert e. lee had more troops at harper’s ferry than god back in 1859. and on december the 2nd of that year, john brown was hanged by the neck until he was dead. but his soul kept marching on.”

[verse 2]
he captured harper’s ferry with his nineteen men so true
he frightened old virginny till she trembled through and through
they hanged him for a traitor, themselves the traitor crew
but his soul goes marching on

[chorus]
glory, glory, hallelujah
glory, glory, hallelujah
glory, glory, hallelujah
and his soul goes marching on

[spoken interlude]
“well, there’s one more little part to this song. in 1861, the war had started, and in a hotel in washington, d.c. was a woman named julia ward howe. she heard this soldier singing, she saw the campfires in the distance; when she got up in the morning, she had six verses of ‘mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the lord’.”

[verse 3]
mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the lord
he is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored
he hath loosed his fateful lightning with his terrible swift sword;
but his truth goes marching on

[chorus]
and glory, glory, hallelujah
glory, glory, hallelujah
glory, glory, hallelujah
and his truth goes marching on
