“we talk a lot about negative advertising today, these days. and we see a lot on television, and some people think that it’s worse than it was in the old days. just to give you a proper balance, when lincoln was president, he was called a filthy storyteller and an ignoramus, a despot, a liar, a thief, a braggart, a buffoon, a usurper, a monster, a purger, a robber, a tyrant, a fiend, and a butcher. now those were just the insults from the north. they got pretty rough in those days. in 1884, democrat grover clеveland was running against republican james g. blainе of the state of maine. blaine had been involved in a corruption scheme and tried to lie his way out of it. the democrats attacked him with this chant. they said, ‘blaine, blaine, james g. blaine—the monumental liar from the state of maine!’ now, the republicans got back at grover cleveland, who admitted that he had fathered a child out of wedlock. and they taunted cleveland with a song whose theme was, “ma, ma, where is pa?” but cleveland won the election, and his followers turned that ditty around and they sang, “ma, oh ma, where is pa? he’s gone to the white house, ha, ha, ha!” anyway, grover cleveland, he kept running, winning most of the time, but in 1888, he won the popular vote, but he lost the electoral vote–it happens once in a while–and he was running against a fellow named harrison. you may remember william henry harrison, 1840. this is his grandson, benjamin harrison. and the democrats said, ‘well, the only thing he’s got going for him is his name, harrison, y’know.’ and they were very clever, they took an old song, ‘my grandfather’s clock is too large for the shelf’, you know that one? and they said, ‘his grandfather’s hat is too big for his head’, y’know. and they came up with, eh, kinda cute song, eh. didn’t win ’em the election.”
