[chorus]
rummage through the junkyard
what do you find?
a little bit of history from other people’s lives
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)

[verse 1]
like mrs. murphy, over here
there’s a smashed-in television
and some crumpled cans of beer
a lady’s high-heel within the tv screen
and twenty tattered jounals that has held her empty dreams
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
under aluminium, two letters faded brown
one from his lover and one from her lawyer out of town
some shattered crystal thrown in his drunken rage
and underneath hеr apr-n stained and yellowing with age
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
a chutеs and ladders game starts up the next pile
along with a football and a doll with a smile
expensive dresses owned by a man’s wife
are most of what remains of robert johson’s life
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
these remnants are horribly burned
along with some car keys savaged and returned
old photographs of the good life they had
and cards of condolance from mothers in [?]
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
clippings a couple months old
that say a drunken driver got six months in parole
a for-sale sign, and a king-sized bed
two painful admissions that his dreams were dead!
[chorus]
rummage through the junkyard
what do you find?
some over-turned old history from other people’s li-li-lives
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)

[verse 2]
fourteen year-old playboys with barely wrinkled covers
and a photo of a prom date, selected by his mother
mixed with college applications
and a bible from the 50s
are the remnants of illusions
that stevie mueller tried to cast away
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
ninety year-old china and thirteen year-old [?]
and a musty, tattered suitcase revealed his folk’s reaction
to his “sinfull and unnatural!” shocking revelation
that his druthers for a lover
were not the type his parents could approve
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
a letter to his parents requesting understanding
but insisting their resistance was selfishly demanding
[?] to his mom says he did not mean to offend her
the evalope is stamped “return to sender”!
[chorus]
rummage through the junkyard
what do you find?
a little bit of history from other people’s lives
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)

[bridge]
the layers of knowledge in each [?]
were the [?] and scattered refuse in somebody’s trash
and though it’s picked up by noon
and it’s dropped off by 5:00
the tales continue on!

[verse 3]
like homeless stevie mueller diswoned by stubborn parents
wound up living in the gutters of the city with the outcasts
weak in spirit, longing comfort
he fell in with lower elements
now steve’s [?] with a lover he’d have never loved before
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
now, robert johnson gallantly tried to go on
but never could accept his perfect life was gone
a year later he tragically took his own life
believing he was nothing with no children or wi-wi-wife
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
lin jones, a co-worker of rob
had been falling deep in love with him each day at the job
never would they share a brighter day
cause robert johnson’s bullet took the future away-way-way!
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
(ooh-wah-wooh ooh-wah-wooh)
and mrs. murphy, she now lives on her own
she left her lousy husband and his flee infested home
while mr. murphy finally agreed to the divorce
and moved in with his lover who would take his cr-p of-course
[outro]
rummage through the junkyard
what do you find?
some old discarded remnants left from other people’s lives
