sitting by the window, glynis tatler looked quite plain
she didn’t know that albert smith was whispering her name
as he lay and said his prayers in a room at the top of the stairs
in a little house, two up, two down in arkwright street

glynis was a wallflower at the law, police pull out guns
she’d even jive with spotty clive if given half a chance
but the chance would never come, so no one to come home
to a little house, two up, two down in arkwright street

then one friday evening as she sat and flowered away
albert locked the carriage up and to her, he did say
“oh please, can you do the twist? let’s see, i say, um, brahms and liszt
let’s both catch up from what we’ve missed and dance the night away”
as albert took her home that night, his heart was beating fast
he knew before he’d reached her door, there’s one thing he must ask
then when glynis said “okay”, they got to it right away
in a little house, two up, two down in arkwright street

then one day by early post, a letter came to say
“albert smith, the time has come for you to march away
we’re calling on the likes of you to fight for king and country too
so leave your wife and baby too, down there in arkwright street”

even as he marched away, there was a smile upon his face
he knew he wasn’t coming back, he clomped out of the race
the telegram came and it said “your husband, albert smith, he’s dead
the widow’s pension, that’s yours instead, it’s fifteen one week”

albert’s still alive, of course, he’s living down in france
there’s lots of lovely ladies there with their hands down albert’s pants
some nights when he, he’s had them all, the barroom, he’ll think of all of them
then he’d recall the night they’d think him of
give their all to him, you know, down in arkwright street
