somewhere in the middle of an empty field
where two men walk up
around their hips there’s a holster
where loaded guns rest inside
off to the side are smaller figures
huddled up to each other

one of the man says to the other
“you, joseph, are a coward
you force me to bring two children to a stand off.”

“it won’t matter,” joseph responds
“for you three will be dead in the end.”

“do you truly know who you are dealing with?” russell fires back
“i’ve been dealing with guns all my life
i know you have to know about the glacial runners.”

“i hope you realize how disgusting all of this is
you’re threatening the lives of children to get a rise out of me
why should they have to be wrapped up in this?
this is between you and me
it should not involve them.”

“they support you. they should go down, too,” joseph growl
“you abhorrent b-st-rd!” russell exclaims
“you truly have lost your mind
were you always this vindictive in your life?
i got wrapped up in a wrong crowd, i admit it
i wanted to prove myself that i was strong, that i was something
now it’s time to truly prove myself
that i am the good guy here.”

“you hypocrite!” joseph shoots back
“you can’t amend for your past
i know what you’ve done
and you are the reason we are here, you b-st-rd!”

“what are you talking about?!
i don’t know why we ended up here!
it makes no sense that we are here in this time
i was minding my business when i found myself in the future.”

“you liar!”

“i’m not lying, joseph!
why can’t you just accept the fact that we have no idea what is going on!
you’ve become a monster in these past two years
meanwhile, i’ve been trying to work on myself”

“shut up!” bellows joseph
“let’s end this, right here, right now!”
the two men stare at each other
their hands hover over their guns
wind blows around, but it can’t break the tension in the air
joseph’s fingers twitch in antic-p-tion
russell’s hand stays still
the seconds passed by like if they were minutes
russell sees joseph’s hand start to arch to his gun
and as joseph tries to bring it up
russell quickly grabs his gun and…

bang, bang, bang

joseph stands still
his arm not even straight out
he looks down to see his shirt filled with holes
blood staining underneath the shirt
he stares at russell one last time
before collapsing into the reeds

russell puts his gun back into the holster
he takes in a deep breath and lets out a long sigh
“it’s over. you two are safe now,” he tells casey and elias
he turns to face them. they look horrified
“i’m sorry you had to watch that, boys
“let’s head on home.”
