invasion italy through sicily
the war boils down to this
germany fading aint it amazing
the allied powers together make a fist
to punch a hole through their defenses
heading straight to the city of rome
bomb italy to submission
so these soldiers can make it home
the casablanca conference set the invasion in motion
without compromising overlord the u.s. was hoping

march through sicily cross the strait of messina
through southern italy up to casino
break the germans will to secure victory
this wars been long but there’s still blood left to bleed

germany fighting battles on the eastern front
were hoping to reinforce italy once they won
but that is proving harder every day that goes by
and they’re not sure when and where the allies would arrive
mussolini running out of time his power starts to fade
the italian people sick and tired of his ways
and the constant bombardment every day from the skies
civilians falling victim to the war and his lies
the allied powers start to build up resources at their ports
in northern africa they -ssemble set their course
the germans send what troops that they can to italy
paratroopers, panzers, to stave off defeat

march through sicily cross the strait of messina
through southern italy up to casino
break the germans will to secure victory
this wars been long but there’s still blood left to bleed

sicily was the first objective for the allies
america and britain look to secure where it lies
in a perfect location in the middle of the sea
a strategical advantage direct path to italy
the 8th british army on the east to siracusa
american 5th on the west to lieta that’s the future
from their both would proceed to secure the south
cutting off the italians then push north up and out

the germans reinforced sicily kesserling
the commander of the forces had a sharp mind wont be beat
a tactical retreat would be his strategy in the end
making the allies pay a price for every inch of land gained
the terrain of sicily mountainous and full of hills
would be used to their advantage fighting hard yes they will
15th panzer and the herman goering panzer
would join the 6th italian to defend the island from disaster

7 nations represented the allied strength
britain, america, canada, new zealand, france
india and the poles also join the advance
battle for sicily phase 1 would begin so fast
250 warships provide support for the landings
moral for the allies very high outstanding
confidence going in cause the tide of war changed
in their favor for now fully supplied to engage

the germans sent their best available panzer units to fight
along with highly skilled parachute units they fight
the germans even though weakened remained determined
loyal to their cause intensity kept burning
yearning to change the tide of the war somehow
they would fight with all their might they will not bow down
defense lines are established now they sit and wait
for the invasion force to arrive they wait

july 10th the invasion force approached sicily
silence was encountered for a moment it would seem
then at the sound of distant fire naval ships they erupted
battering the beaches and providing needed cover
the allies gained the beaches quick with relative ease
the luftwaffe the only resistance they felt yes indeed
all landing sites were captured in just a few days
july 15th the allies punched deep into sicily

to the east siracusa and augusta captured
to the west licata and gela fell to their captures
they converted airfields to use for themselves
sicily being consumed so quick give them h-ll
the germans held defense lines in front of mt messina
and another from fratello to catania
so the allies strike northwest to the city of polermo
the germans retreat west sicily has fallen

mussolini left office as the allies push east
the etna line would be the battle that could lead to defeat
but the allies hindered by terrain and the german brilliance
their tactical retreat proved difficult to beat
every step back the germans took they set up new lines
systematically retreating to italy biding time
40, 000 germans escape being captured so sweet
bittersweet victory for the allies it would seem
sicily had been captured but at the cost of many lives
now they set their sights on italy rome is the prize
hopefully italy will defect to their side
best case scenario trapping the germans ending the fight
but there’s lots of ground to travel more blood yet to spill
determination not lose both sides they will feel
the allies now prepare to cross messina you see
their gathering storm will strike at italy

september 3rd 8th army landed uncontested the germans left the night before
8th army now set to make their way through the southern tip of italy to the core
meanwhile 5th army under commander clark sailed to the gulf of solermo
they were attacked by bombers to land on the 9th of september they don’t know
the germans are awaiting them now to rain fire
every inch of beach is contested so it’s dire
kesserling was ready he sent 8 divisions south
disarming italians on their way to the bout
selermo would be a fierce fight an all-out attack
on the beach head by the germans tryna push the allies back
16th panzer had the high ground overlooking the beach
artillery fire cause confusion for the allies a near defeat

but they would hold strong keep on fighting don’t give in so much is at stake
the entire operation could go in a tailspin if 5th army is now pushed away
their only saving grace was support from their ships which were also under attack
from the skies above but they stayed steadfast holding strong the beach head stayed in tact
solermo remained contested but 8th army draws near
so the germans fall back tactically it appears
once again its their tactic effectively
fall back to defense lines further in italy
so 5th army busted through solermo eventually
marching north with 8th army who was headed north east

october 1st the allies reached naples
the germans left the city ruined setting the table
for no advantage gained taking the city
the port was destroyed it was all such a pity
both armies pushed on 5th across the mountains
and 8th army across the river trino hardly taking a pounding
the last defense line was now up a head
the gustave line where germany will stand never dead

the line the last defense before the lyri valley
a path through the mountains straight to rome past the abbey
of monte casino the most formidable position
on the gustav line the fighting for it would be vicious

a quick victory is proving fict-tious
trying to take the mountainside the abbey stood on contentious
india tried it first but the germans repelled
new zealand would be next they also didn’t fare well

the town of casino situated below
became a vicious fight close quarters amidst the rubble
cause the allies’ bomb the abbey and the town a mistake
giving the germans a more difficult place to take
meanwhile up north the allies land at anzio
january 22nd landing uncontested so
they could push in from the north but they were ordered to secure
a bridgehead first a mistake that would come clear

at the abbey america gained key hills
but the death toll rose high manifested so real
6, 000 men lost due to german line of sight
but the battle goes on they must keep up the fight
reinforcements at anzio h.g. and 15th panzer
the germans mount an attack on the bridge head faster
the 7th of february pushing the allies back
both sides eventually exhausted and defeated tough clash

march 15th signified a fearsome battle
between the german 1st parachute and the 2nd new zealand
back at the town of casino street by street in the rubble
both sides fought intensely face to face every man
the stalemate at anzio served to prove one thing
only a frontal -ssault on the gustav line will gain anything
clark was stripped of his command due to the failure up north
montgomery’s 8th would now lead the charge for the force

may 11th signified a last determined offensive
to take the lyri valley artillery is their signal
the polish army newly raised now charged up the mountain
to take monte casino filled with rage hearts pounding
determined hatred for the germans they feel as they push high
up the mountain taking losses but they won’t fail now
the germans eventually left the abbey began their retreat
the poles raised a flag to signify the defeat

the french also made ground up north through imp-ssible terrain
paving the way for the british and americans
the gustave line fell on may 27th
a fighting retreat for the germans they will settle
on the next day however 6th core broke out of anzio
the germans could be cut off and defeated soundly
but clark had a different plan race to rome
another mistake the germans escape north

they weren’t out of the woods yet the road to rome contested
as the germans retreat inflicting loss still effective
the beginning of june saw the germans complete retreat
surrendering rome to the allies they were beat
but not decisively the triumph will be short lived
june 4th america took rome marching by the coliseum
all of this is soon forgotten by events in france
and the normandy invasion circ-mstance

soon the italians surrender
and leave the germans all alone
to fight on two fronts
germany will fall back home
