i’m sitting here looking at old glory, the american flag. and though it’s kinda old and faded, it’s still causin’ me to think back to when i was just a young boy
we used to say the pledge of allegiance every morning at school. i still remember how proud i was in fifth grade, when they chose me out of all the kids in the cl-ss to take down the flag every afternoon, and how intently i watched, as they taught me to fold it in the shape of a triangle, and how careful to never, never, never let it touch the ground
as my high school days came to an end, and i stood at graduation, again i recited the pledge of allegiance to the american flag. i remember the look on the recruiter’s face as i took my hand outside my graduation gown and proudly placed it over my heart

you know, no one really told me what the red, white, and blue colors symbolize, but deep inside, i knew what they meant to me. to me, the red stripes are the blood of my forefathers. the blood that was shed both here and abroad, so that this nation could remain the freedom and the hope of the world
and the white stripes are that very freedom, and a constant reminder that freedom is not free; that we must all do our part to keep it alive
and the blue background behind those beautiful stars, well… i guess, to me, that’s the tears and heartaches of every mother, wife, boy or girl whose son, husband, or daddy never came home, and the pride of every father, knowing his son had done his part so we could enjoy this great, great nation

as i stare at this old, faded flag, i remember when my father gave it to me. i was just a little boy, and he told me: “son, always be proud of this flag, and what it stands for, and allow god to bless america.”
i’m standing here holding this flag, and at this very moment the television and newspapers are showing men in other parts of the world fighting, demonstrating, k!lling… places where freedom has been replaced by terrorism
and you know, whenever there’s some sort of trouble or disturbance, somebody always says: “what are we doing getting involved.” well, all i can say is: i think we know why. and i can think of no greater honor than to stand up and fight like the men and women who gave us this flag. men and women who came home with this flag wrapped around their bodies

so, i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america, and to the republic for which it stands; one nation under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all
