[verse 1]
he’d been driving slow for a few miles
margie sue was quiet, her fingers touching the back of his neck
felt kind of like she’d got hold of a piece of straw
and was teasing again, he thought

[verse 2]
he’d been driving slow so it wasn’t hard to stop
there were four or five cars parked along the water
but they were just people fishing
he didn’t mind if they watched
[verse 3]
she didn’t move and he didn’t feel much like talking
so he just got out and started up the hill
it seemed like a long way once you were on foot
he kept walking, not in a hurry
margie sue was teasing now even if she wasn’t before
anyway, not looking back, he heard her door open

[verse 4]
the grass was real short, stubble and dry
it was burnt early this year because they hadn’t had much rain
the clouds moved lazily, even though there was a wind
the sun was hot when it showed
it all felt kind of dry in the throat
except for the lake looking cool and just a bit ripple by the wind

[verse 5]
he could hear the dust, stones, and grass sound just behind him
margie knew he heard the sounds, but she still liked to surprise him
he knew when she wanted him to smile so he just kept moving slow
she would talk about that afterwards
he felt the straw on his neck again
funny how dry her fingers were in the summer
it was like they’d been out there in the sun with the grass
bent by the wind and dusty
when she came beside him, he looked around the other way
and smiled too soon so she could catch him
she did and laughed
[verse 6]
margie sue liked buffalo pound lake
“the buffalo used to come here from everywhere to drink”, she said
she started to talk now about the way the hills folded into one another
she told him she’d sometimes make the covers on the bed fold into themselves
so she could pretend she was looking at these hills
she said she thought the prairie was like a bed
broad and flat and the hills were where it got messed up
she talked a lot about funny things like that

[verse 7]
she touched his hand and held it
the heat was making waves in the light at the top
and he remembered her telling him how the sun could do that

[verse 8]
as they climbed, he watched his boots get dusty
he hadn’t thought much about their coming here
and he didn’t much want to
it seemed easier to watch his boots
and feel the sun on his back

[verse 9]
they followed the ups and downs of the smaller knolls
and worked their way over to the far side of the hill
on the far side margie sue sat down
without looking at each other, they both took off their clothes
then she lay down naked and just stayed quiet
not looking at him
he didn’t know what she was thinking but he lay down beside her
it was like that for a long time
then she turned to him and said she just wanted to get dusty first
she liked the dust
[verse 10]
he guessed there were a couple of birds’ nests nearby
because two meadowlarks were singing at them for awhile
he heard the wind more than them
he heard a car leave down by the lake
a prairie gopher was nearby too
he didn’t open his eyes
but he knew the gopher was watching them

[verse 11]
when he touched her, she was smooth and powder-dry
she touched his whole body
and her touch felt like the grass and earth under him
they were very slow
not wanting any wetness but what was in the lake and inside
he brushed her br–sts with his lips, careful to keep them closed
it was mainly their hands that moved soft-like around them
his moving slowly to the water
they were a long time together

[verse 12]
near the end it was getting darker
and he figured maybe it was getting late
it was darker but he didn’t look up
then it started to rain
slowly it fell on them and the dust and the grass
slow at first
it was just one of those dark clouds that pass on the prairies
you know the kind
there are so many clouds, but only a few hold rain
