way back in first grade
the teacher said that we should stay awake
“don’t go to bed, you’ve got one chance in life
to see that comet pass before your eyes
so don’t regret it”
and i, i asked “why should i lie awake til 3 a.m
to see a ball of gas and rock go flying over cleveland?”
and she said i’d be the only student who would miss it, and i said:
“you told us not to do things just ‘cause other people did”

she said “you’ll never ever see that comet
you never will see halley’s comet
you’ll nеver ever see that comеt again
never again”

and so i went to bed
and while my dad stayed up
i got my beauty rest
but it didn’t do much
and next day all the kids
were fighting over
who had seen it with a bigger telescope
and i wasn’t ashamed to tell them i hadn’t felt the need to see it
they stood with their mouths dropped to the ground
unable to believe it
“chuck, didn’t you hear?
it only comes around like every 80 years”
and kids can be cruel
but you know i never even shed a tear
they said “you’ll never ever see that comet
you never will see halley’s comet
you’ll never ever see that comet again
never again”

and if they ask if i’ve seen casablanca
i’ll answer a resounding “no”
and “have you been to the grand canyon?”
i’ll say “i didn’t wanna go”
and “have you eaten caviar?”
i’ll say “i think that stuff is gross”
and if someone is dumb enough
to even talk about that rock

i’ll tell them “no i haven’t seen that comet
it’s just a stupid f-cking comet
like someone dragged a match across the sky
so i don’t mind
that i will never ever see that comet
i don’t get the appeal of comets
so never mention halley’s comet again
