letra de the exeter wreck - charles j. adams iii

Loading...

the night of may 12th, 1899 was moonless and in the village of exeter, along the schuylk!ll river south of reading, the cannonball express, with many dignitaries including a u.s. senator aboard, was parked on the main track while a crippled locomotive was backing into a siding

and speeding down the line toward exeter was another passenger train

signals fouled

the big locomotive plunged into the last car of the cannonball

the wreck, an account said, was, “…indescribable. human arms and limbs sticking out of windows with splinters driven through them. dead bodies piled in and around the wreckage. it was sickening.”

29 men, women and children died that moonless night, most in the parlor car of the cannonball express

that senator, boies penrose, was spared the wrath of the grim reaper

he had been in the parlor car, but along the fatal route, he made his way forward to another car, which was virtually untouched in the crash: the smoking car, where senator penrose could enjoy a good cigar – a cigar which, in a way, saved his life
