january 18, some years ago
j had called me while i slept
and when i called him up his voice was toneless
martin died three days ago back at his old room
his sister sent an invitation for the memorial in may
where i sat in the back row and watched the pile grow
on the way home from the funeral
i had this image from before:
martin’s dad worked as a clergy-man at the church that held the mourn
and the thought of him sending his son away sustained within me
whilst driving back on the e18, the car fell quiet, but the breeze
that day was the first time i saw my friends all in tears and that sight still lingers on, it withers on ‘til this day

there’s a sorrow withholding at the feet of my tongue
i only spoke with him once or twice towards the end of his life
