someone asked me why do i write about civil rights in that i never lived through racism. i was born in 1969 in an era after the movement after dr. martin luther king died in 1968. i was born in meridian, mississippi. i was brought to las vegas when i was 9 months old. at that time there were protest and riots on the west side of north las vegas. schools were segregated until 1974. i went to private school where everyone dressed alike so we looked the same and through religious faith we integrated and treated everyone regardless with respect. i did not grow up prejudice

i lived in a segrgated neighborhood that was promptly black. you can’t walk certain places because it’s not safe because of street gangs territory. there were drive byes. i lived in a community where your neighbors and church were your village protection who gave you the moral support. in the seventies las vegas was so small everyone knew each other

there were times i questioned racism at a time i did not understand what it meant. like why did kids not like other kids that were different. in the eyes of god we were the same. where i can’t talk to a certain group because they are not like us. i can’t sit next to them because the seat is taken. racism meant to me when i’m not treated fairly as everyone else. as we learn about history we learn bias -ssociations and relationships. there was favortism over another and it is not racism. the other person is usually more qualified with better sk!lls, talent, and knowledge. where you must be compet-tive

i’ve been shot at my home. i’ve been accosted by the police. i’ve been a victim of gang violence. i’ve been gang bang fight. i’ve seen my front door kicked in. i’ve been told i was not welcome. i was locked in a mental home. i lost everyone i ever got in contact with. non one wanted to -ssociate with me because they did not understand

then there are people that have been nice. those who encouraged me to never give up my dreams to finish college and become a writer. those were my neighbors my family and teachers

some people say how dare i be the new poet as if i were the voice of their people. some say i was the next maya angelou. i am a civil rights activist for my struggle and for the las vegas community coming from the las vegas school district to write this way being poor for every race in las vegas. i am the voice behind my poems
