the notion of the cynocephalus
has an important history in christianity
it comes of course from the h-llenic past
from the legends of alexander the great
but the image of the dog-headed man
became the central image
of the christian “edge of the world”
the ultimate hostile foreigner
and personally i think that it partly became so important
because of its strong -n-logies in the bible
christ speaks of the canaanite woman
and he tells her that one should not give to dogs
the bread that is meant for the children
and the answer of the canaanite woman
is -n-logous to what we see in this icon
that even the dogs eat the crumbs
that fall from their master’s table
so, here in the icon of pentecost we see this dog
not so much at the end of the table
but maybe on the edge of the church
