or if a kid could be a tattoo
that you were thinking of getting
when you get the font just right

or a jar of rocks in the closet
or a bl–dy mouth in detention

when my mother is asked to describe features
she instead can think of bouquets
comprised of tubes and wires
or of haircuts that went by without comment
or of months spent on a mattress
playing cards to p-ss the time

or of features that turned into foreclosures
when a man was just a husband
and could not be a provider
or if a kid could be a jet ski
on a day of only smiles
we did not think we could do that

or a time in march we get together
or a u turn that became a goodbye

when my mother is asked if she has children
and she doesn’t just say 4
i don’t understand why
