everyone, it seems, is getting gifts for christmas, but for some people, the backdrop of jollity, partying, and antic-p-ted happiness isn’t helpful. some are wrapped up in the darkness of the problems they face. the idea of a perfect season makes them feel they’re missing out, and can emphasize their pain. c.s. lewis noted that mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it’s more common, and also harder to bear. the mental health foundation estimates that about a quarter of us experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year, and mixed anxiety and depression is almost common mental disorder. there’s no easy prescription to solving issues of mental health. it’d be great to think that the christmas message, with its promise of peace on earth, could be an easy answer to the problems people face, yet people of faith are pr-ne to issues of the mind and anxieties, just like everyone else. as david noted in psalm 38, “i go mourning all the day long; i groan because of the turmoil of my heart.” but we know too that darkness can be a reality. peace of god, which is beyond all understanding, guard our hearts and thoughts in christ jesus, and may almighty god bless us, the father, the son, and the holy spirit, amen
