during sermon, we would draw in the margins
of the programs counting out all the
spelling errors and the minutes and the seconds
until we could leave for home
after church we would eat the leftover
bread and wine and drive to a local diner
sometimes to a chinese restaurant
sometimes red lobster

on palm sundays, they passed the leaves around
we would weave them into sheets and baskets
pack the pews to make room for the
only holiday crowds that gathered round
