letra de cowboy's lament - slackeye slim
when i’m dead and in my grave
and the lord takes me from here
i’ll shoot my gun in heaven
keep on ropin’ steers
well, the crops back home
the d-mn things wouldn’t grow
and the cow fell over dead where she stood
they started shuttin’ down the mines
and the well was runnin’ dry
got hard for a man to earn his keep
and i had me a wife
and i had me a son
i ain’t seen them since i don’t know when
the hardest thing i ever done
was goin’ west to the sun
and knowin’ all along i won’t be back
told ‘еm i’d see ’em soon
truth is, i just had to get away
’cause i got a ramblin’ soul and a driftin’ hеart
and a mighty powerful hunger for good meat
got my six gun at my side
said goodbye
and then i headed out west
to be a cowboy
found a job punchin’ cows
headin’ north from a texas town
it wasn’t long before i got to thinkin’
’bout the money i could make
if i done things my own way
and the earth beneath my feet, it started shakin’
see, for years i’ve tried to hide
a rugged evil in my eye
but anymore i can’t tell what’s wrong and right
so i wandered in a bar with a deck of crooked cards
a man said ‘texas hold ’em?’
and i said ‘godd-mn right’
hold ’em high
better keep ’em where i can see ’em, boy
and then i rode away on his horse
with a pocket full of gold and a photo of his family in my hand
i got back on the trail
and i seen two steel rails
and i asked some feller what he was doin’
said he was buildin’ a road
gonna stretch from coast to coast
said it’d change the future of the west
i figured he was right
and started thinkin’ that i might
have to find a new line of work
told him to keep on workin’
said i got a train to rob
and i can’t very well do that without no rails
keep drivin’ that steel, son
swing that hammer and if you fall over dead
i’ll be sure and give you a good, christian burial
i ain’t no savage
but there’s good, fresh meat around
and i ain’t gonna let it go to waste
i’m a real bad man
but when it comes to this land
it’s about the only thing that i love
i came here for a better life
i left my son and i left my wife
this time i won’t back down without a fight
so ride your big railroad train
across the open range
but if you see me comin’ you better start to worry
traded everythin’ i coulda had
for boots and spurs, a horse and a hat
and i’ll be d-mned if i quit that easy
see, i can’t go home
this here life is all i know
and no matter what happens, i won’t change
’cause i won’t never be nothin’
but a cowboy
