lights up, observe the screen, peep the first scene
it was december 31st, 2013
new year’s eve party was lit—two friends—mark and chris
both were visibly drunk—it wasn’t hard to miss
on a boat at the docks, fun and joking a lot
numb from multiple shots, rum and coke on the rocks
some were smoking some pot, producing a cloud
the music was loud, it was moving the crowd
see, mark and chris were close like tigris and euphrates
on the dance floor, made eyes with two ladies
throwing the vibes back and forth like ping-pong
the aura seemed strong as thеy talked between songs
around 11 or so, it was beginning to snow
thе ladies told mark and chris they were ready to go
chris suggested that they take the party back to his crib
they could watch the ball drop there, so that’s what they did
chris was in the driver’s seat, mark was riding shotgun
ladies in the back seat, what happened next was not fun
i’m sure that you can guess from what i told you so far
it was snowing so hard, chris lost control of the car
what a dumb route to imitate, it’s a hard tale
spun out on the interstate, hit the guardrail
car flipped over twice, passengers ejected
travelers projected, a massacre’s expected
ambulance arrives, is anybody alive?
thank god, miraculously everybody survived
still that doesn’t take away all the gloomy repercussions
lots of blood, broken bones and numerous concussions
but less than a week after this
from the hospital, all made their exodus, except for chris
just a couple months removed from getting his diploma
“survived” was a misnomer cause chris was in a coma

with flowers, chris’s room was prettily decorated
while chris was unconscious, heavily medicated
mark was devastated, feeling survivor’s guilt
it shook the foundation on which his life was built
desolated by his strife toward the christ he ignored
mark rededicated his life to the lord
see mark and chris first met in youth group together
pursued truth together, then flew the coop together
now mark and chris’ fam grow as close as they can be
praying that chris from his comatose state would be free
years passed, chris’ family stood firm like a fort
even had to fight in court to keep chris on life support
mark would read to him, hoping god would heal him through his word
after 9 long years, behold a miracle occurred
mark witnessed the gift, a lift from the abyss
chris opened his eyes and said, “yo what did i miss?”

mark was absolutely amazed. he couldn’t believe that his friend came back to life. and so he combed his mind to figure out, “where should i begin?”

first things first, i came back to christ
while you were in a coma, jesus brought me back to life
yes, i’m married now with three kids, this fact is true
and my oldest son is named chris after you
as for those ladies in the car, they survived
they’re got saved too, i can’t wait to tell them you’re alive
as for the world, it’s like shakespeare was here
it’s clearly weird- here, let me take it year by year
2014- you ready? let’s step into the vault
bill cosby got charged with s-xual assault
at same time you were comatose
robin williams suicide, phillip seymour hoffman overdosed
tensions unrivaled, downward spiral
when police k!lling unarmed black people went viral
that mars hill church? it did not last
all that’s left is many broken hearts and a podcast

2015 saw the evil works of isis
christians martyred on camera, a church in crisis
at a black church in charleston, studying the bible
a white supremacist brought death on his arrival
online, people talking careless, and not embarrassed
supreme court ruled in favor of same-s-x marriage
vanity fair magazine- loud statement
bruce jenner on the cover, but bruce is now caitlyn

as mark continued to tell chris about each year, he said, “brace yourself. it’s about to get even crazier.”

2016 sees supreme disorder
flint, michigan no longer has clean water
the country and the church put to the test
donald trump became the president of the u.s
yes, the same donald trump from the apprentice
don’t look at me like that. i’m serious, i meant it
while some were mostly cautious, others were mostly nauseous
‘cause it’s because of christians he got in the oval office
2017 was a horrifying scene
we saw the downfall of harvey weinstein
#metoo the movement sees new recruitment
for voices of women, it leads to improvement
white supremacists marched in charlottesville
a female protestor by a car was k!lled
yet another active shooter, so many got hurt
fifty-nine shot and k!lled at a vegas concert

2018, speaking of #metoo
abuse in the church, the sbc too
once again we see how fleeting life can be
with the deaths of aretha, mac miller and stan lee
bill cosby had his trial, he was found guilty, fam
while christians everywhere mourned the death of billy graham
while still no gun control laws are planned
another school shooting- florida, parkland
and i think 17 people died in that one. it’s like we never learn

2019, a twist in the plot was reached
on the day when president trump got impeached
he stayed in office, still many people’s favorite guy
while josh harris kissed the christian faith goodbye
the art world still felt the burden and the struggle
the death of toni morrison, murder of nipsy hustle
and just when we thought we’ve seen everything
kanye west proclaimed that jesus is king!

2020, that took us over man’s limit
covid-19, that’s a global pandemic
a million people k!lled in the united states alone
donald trump is out—joe biden takes the throne
cities on fire, many more destroyed
protests worldwide for the death george floyd
were christians finally united, you ask?
nah, man, the church was divided over masks

2021, trump didn’t like the result
so many of his followers decided to revolt
what many thought was laughable was more than tragic though
on january 6th, a mob stormed the capitol
we still see the effects, but yo, peep what’s next
the deaths of anne rice, larry king, dmx
one thing that rocked me bad that i forgot to add
kobe and his daughter died in a helicopter crash

it’s 2022, things are feeling kinda hopeless
coming into focus—division over wokeness
more well-known christians claiming deconstruction
russians invaded ukraine, more destruction
some were enraged, but yo we burst in praise
supreme court overturned roe vs. wade
one thing’s still for sure, the rich get richer
oh, by the way, elon musk bought twitter

[epilogue]
when mark was finished talking, chris said “that was deep
that’s too much to handle, man, i’m going back to sleep”
mark said, “see, that’s exactly what i mean
you could have been woke up back in 2014!”
mark’s next words were a gold mine
would things have been different if chris was awake this whole time?
