letra de political vs. biblical (interlude) - shai linne

i’m convinced that one of the major problems today in the church is that many of us think first and foremost in political categories rather than biblical categories. the late tim keller said something really insightful about this. he said that biblically, there’s social issues that all christians should be concerned about

a biblical view of marriage

justice for the unborn

ethnic or racial injustice

care for the poor and marginalized

the problem is that two of those issues are seen as “conservative” issues, and two are seen as “progressivе”, or “liberal” issues. so, for examplе, take two christians and ask, “what social issues are important to you?” and let’s say one says, “justice for the unborn and a biblical view of marriage.” you know what you’re gonna hear? “right wing!” “republican!” “trump voter!” “fox news!” take another christian and say, “what social issues are important to you?” and that christian says, “ethnic or racial injustice, care for the poor and the marginalized.” you know what you’re gonna hear?

“woke!” “crt”! “democrat!” “marxist!”

you see that? that’s what happens when you divide biblical concerns into political categories. but here’s the thing: all four of those things are biblical concerns!

take justice for the unborn:

psalm 139:13
“for you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.”

what about a biblical view of marriage- one man and one woman?

genesis 2:24
“therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”
what about care for the poor and marginalized?

proverbs 14:31
“whoever oppresses a poor man insults his maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.”

what about ethnic or racial injustice?

deuteronomy 24:17
“you shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner…”

who was the sojourner in that context? gentiles, or non-jews. in other words, ethnic minorities. we’re followers of jesus, man! and jesus, at points, offends all of our political sensibilities. where are the christians who embrace their identity as strangers and pilgrims and therefore refuse to allow their christianity to be co-opted by secular partisan politics? we’re supposed to be bible people. and that means we’re supposed to be faithful to what the scriptures teach on all issues. and if doing that makes me sound at times like i’m “conservative”, and other times like i’m “liberal” or “progressive”, so what?

true bible people ain’t trippin’ off secular categories. we’re supposed to be jesus people. that means we don’t follow a donkey or an elephant. we follow the lion and the lamb. the lamb who was slain for the sins of his people. and the conquering lion of judah, who will trample all his enemies under his feet, and before whom every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that jesus christ is lord, to the glory of the father. truth over tribe, scripture over political party, jesus over everything! you know what it is. soli deo gloria. now back to lyrical theology part three: sociology, already in progress
