[verse i]
“seperate but equal”, never meant to equalise
it took our far nation too long to realise
that the laws in place to oppress the race
kept us behind in the sp-ce race
even though the odds were stacked against them
three black women, merely considered computers at nasa
used stem to take a stand
they knew that when oppression becomes law
you use resistance to rise above it all
now here’s the tale of dorothy vaughn, mary jackson, and katherine johnson
and how their efforts won america the sp-ce race

[chorus]
nothing can stop me, i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
nothing can stop me, i’m on my way up

[verse ii]
dorothy was born in 1910
women in math wasn’t that big then
vaughn was a mathematician
following ambition on her own mission
she wanted to become a supervisor
just a matter of time till she blew like a geyser
but young vaughn was overlooked ’cause she was black
and she was like “man, that’s wack”
but then she saw opportunity
humans used to compute, but now technology
could compute a lot faster, so she did master
a new computer language
yeah, dorothy
taught herself how to program the ibm
and taught her whole staff so they could do it again
her mind was built bigger, calculate for hidden figures
professional, persistent, loyal to the end
“i changed what i could and what i couldn’t i endured”
she worked hard when success wasn’t assured
she taught herself, though she didn’t have access
then became the first black supervisor at nasa
[chorus]
nothing can stop me, i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
nothing can stop me, i’m on my way up

[verse ii]
mary winston jackson was an african-american
mathematician on a mission
nasa’s first woman engineer
for most of the men, it wasn’t clear
labeled as a human computer, yeah
mary never backed down, she stood her ground
confidence was through the roof
knew exactly what she wanted to do
had to get a science degree
but they wouldn’t let her
she went to court as a last resort
that’s that ambition
made her case to the judge’s face
got special permission
to attend at then
segregated hamption
admidst the pain, she did maintain
and stayed at nasa, designed planes
trust this, she was committed to justice
sometimes, to follow dreams, you gotta make a ruckus

[verse iii]
katherine golbe, her story has finally gone global
calculating oval trajectories
eliptical orbits, all insider her cerebral cortex (brain)
to help the mercury mission
finest at math, no competition
best human computer, but they would still abuse her
even though she became mission critical
they wouldn’t even share coffee, miserable
katherine could do the math better than them
so she built up the trust of your boy, john glenn (your boy, john)
long hours, as her coworkers glowered
to help the usa become the greater power
faced hate, but she didn’t absorb it
she did the math and put the first american in orbit

[chorus]
nothing can stop me, i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
nothing can stop me, i’m on my way up

[verse iv]
i just want to say that you to all three
for leading the whole team
to that great position that we call victory
and i’m not talkin’ bout nasa, i’m talkin’ bout the ancestors
for givin’ some of their talents to three wonderful black sisters
’cause now, thanks to them, we no longer live in fear
of not gettin’ that job that we’ve been dreamin’ of for years
so we, as minorities, can do what we feel we were born to be
and we can’t be told no by the skin from the authorities
so katherine, mary and dorothy
we’re glad that we’re tellin’ your story
and to all of my young minorities
do whatever your heart’s tellin’ you you wanna be
[chorus]
nothing can stop me, i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
i’m on my way up
nothing can stop me, i’m on my way up
