the adults were
gathered round the kitchen table
draped in their finest polyester
winston and salem tangoed in the air
while cutty sark sailed the seas
the focus was masterpiece
the auction board game
where players bid on paintings
by luminary artists such as
chagall, monet, van gogh
chuck connelly, walter robinson and mark kostabi
suddenly, my father’s voice bellowed
drowning out the television
that was babysitting me
“bobby, i need an exеcutive decision!”
he thеn tasked me to select a painting
from amongst the portfolios
of the other players
this was my big chance to gain access
to the inner sanctum of the adult’s table
however, my experience as an art appraiser
consisted of flipping baseball cards
during school lunches and h–rding those
of my philadelphia hometown heroes
schmidt, luzinski and carlton
i studied the artwork intensively
amongst several ominous baroque paintings
a girl wearing a bright red hat stood out
“a ruhn-waar,” my father educated me
whiskey underscoring
his newfound french accent
next, my eyes wandered over
to a portrait of
stern-faced grandparents
brandishing a pitchfork
was the american dream
hard work and poverty?
ultimately, i was captivated
by a simple scene
of patrons enjoying coffee
at a late-night diner
upon closer examination
i noticed a heavenly sign
that proclaimed “phillies”
my father duly paid aunt cathy
and i could see her dismay
as he unveiled
the painting’s valuation card
i had never seen a number
with so many zeros
