from humble beginnings

but his illiteracy was rife
was self-taught to read
it would help him succeed
to achieve this good deed

in 1860 he ran for presidential office
he became the 16th president and was the one who brought us
the emanc-p-tion proclamation
reached his destination
to, free the population
every slave in the whole nation

he was born in 1818
grew up in the midst of slavery
he thought it was unsavory

he lived on a plantation
with no formal education
understood his situation
he despised incarceration

so he fled to new bedford
manual work his occupation
he changed his surname to douglass

he removed all of his strife
so he’s out there enjoying life

he got a formal invitation
to spread his information
at an anti-slavery convention
