we started off for texas
that good old lone star state
across the nebraska prairies
the james boys we did meet
with guns, and knives, and pistols
we all sat down to play
while drinking that bad whiskey
to p-ss the time away

we saddled up our ponies
and headed north to go
that godforsaken country they call min-ne-so-te-o
’cause i had my eye on the northfield bank
when brother bob did say
“if you undertake that job, son
you sure will curse the day.”

we stationed out our pickets
up to the bank did go
it was there behind the counter, boys
i struck my fatal blow
“then hand us all your money, man
give us no delay
for we are the noted younger boys
and we’ve got no time to play.”

but the cashier, being brave and bold
denied our noted band
jessie fired the shot that k!lled
k!lled that n-ble man
in vain, we searched the money drawers
while the battle raged outside

until we saw our safety was
a quick and desperate ride
so, c’mon boys, ride for your life
there’s hundreds on our trail
we soon were overtaken
and landed right in jail

in stillwater jail, i lay
wearin’ my life away
now let the james boys tell the tale
of that eventful day
