[chorus]
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw

[spoken]
i stare out the window of the arcade, at the dust settled on a pick-up in the lot; someone drew a smiley face on the windscreen—it was me, a few weeks back. i glance down at my granddad’s watch as i’m lookin’ up, i see her. i give her a big smile and two thumbs up! alright. reelin’ it in

as the night goes on, i embarrass myself in ski-ball, she mercilessly beats me in air hockey, but i get her laughing enough to sneak a couple goals in, so i’ll take it! she leans in and breathes out. “let’s get outta here.” i nod, too fast, and we make for the door. suddenly, my whole body jerks as my pockets snagged on a cabinet on the way out

it’s a claw machine, full of amazing stuff: gold necklaces, earrings, jewel bracelets… i ask if i can salvage some respect if i win her something. she laughs and leans against the machine while i put in a dollar, and the claw comes to life, squeaking along the track toward a bracelet that’ll look great on her. it drops directly over my prize and closes. it raises and limply drops the bracelet back to the floor and returns to its home in the corner. so close!

well, i have to try again after that. the claw squeals back into action and i lose track of time. reaching down to give it one more try, i realize i’m outta cash. i look around and notice that she’s gone. it’s been almost 2 hours

oh well. i head home

[chorus]
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
[spoken]
the claw screeches along again and again, just barely missing every single time. this time, though, i can feel it. i carefully line it up above a necklace and press the b-tton to descend. nothing happens

i press it again; the claw shakes and rockets toward me, spraying shattered glass in my eyes and grips my throat with a terrible strength as the claws penetrate into my flesh!

i shoot upright in my bed. i check granddad’s watch, and i see it’s 3 a.m. laying back down, i catch my breath and try to force myself back to sleep until my alarm eventually goes off [?] my morning routine, ’til i go to grab my keys, and they slip through my fingers, sliding far across the wood floor of my apartment

once i’m at the office, i go to the vending machines for an energy drink. i’m gonna need it today. the machine greedily eats my dollar, and i punch in my number. the coil turns, the can lands—thunk—at an angle against the glass, lodged in place

just then, the door shrieks open on its hinge, and i jump at the sound. my boss loudly says, “we’re letting you go.” i’ve been “dropping the ball lately”, he says

now i’m sitting in an empty lot, looking at the window of the arcade. my eyes catch the hand of the claw machine glinting in the sun, and i swear i see a finger move, beckoning me

[chorus]
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
[spoken]
without a job, i can’t make rent this month

but, but! if i can just win something out of this f-cking machine, i can sell it, and at least cover the month

i thought about selling the watch, but i just can’t bring myself to do it. winning is the only way

again, and again, and again, and again, the claw barely misses, or doesn’t grip tight enough, or goes down too far, and lands useless on its side, before grabbing at the air, and drawing up empty again!

as it’s traveling home, it creaks and sways side to side, and i swear i hear the rhythm of mocking laughter

i’m down to my last dollar. the machine slowly draws it in, spits it back out at me. [?] dollar on the corner of the machine to try it again. the claw lurches along, and i drop it over a necklace; that’s gotta be easy to grab, right? the fingers close around the chain, and the claw rises [?], [?] my prize

the claw inches closer to the prize hole and my breath freezes in me, as it jerks at the last second, releasing my victory early

my salvation is dangling halfway on the edge of the prize box. i slam the machine with my shoulder, trying to loosen it. nothing

looking around, i see a few folks that are here, completely oblivious to me, so i bend down and reach in, and i try to grab the necklace from the end. my breath fogs the glass as i stretch just a little further, and i see the claw never returned to its corner it drops instantly and is on me, sinking into my bicep and pulling me in

before i can make a noise, i feel my feet leave the ground

and i know the void

[chorus]
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
yeah, yeah, yeah
in your mind, you will find
there is no escape from the claw
[instrumental break]

[outro, spoken]
