september 2003. school had just started back and was already a slog. one night, i think a thursday, me and my idiot friends were hanging out in one of the endless suburbs that dotted the outskirts of town. jack had just scr-ped together enough cash to buy an old skateboard off his older brother and was trying to show off. he sucked in, and never [?] much better
we were ducking between the cars and trucks that lined the streets all night long. we had all found refuge in the truck bed of a pickup, sitting in there, [?] and roasting each other. all of a sudden, we see blue lights against the darkness. aw, sh-t. officer [?] rolls up. “boys, we’ve been gettin’ calls about noise. now get home and i won’t call your parents.” fair enough. we scatter, and it’s all over
3 a.m. rolls around, and i wake up to the faraway thud of an explosion, too far away to investigate now. the next day, rumors run through town. turns out a truck of some kind had a car bomb taped to the underside of it. jealous ex-boyfriend trying to get revenge, and it’s gone all kinds of sideways. we show up at the scene; turns out it’s the same truck we were messin’ around in the night before. debris is all cleared away, but we can see something burned into the pavement: clear as day, the letters e-d. ed
like some sort of signature. to say either i had done it, or i had prevented something else from happening. [?] some sort of guardian angel, or some demon, or some h-ll-bringer; i don’t know. still haven’t figured it out. all i know is that i cannot stop thinking about ed
