the strings on this guitar are growing duller than the light
that shines on the shadows of the people passing by
they sound different everyday like birds with the rising sun
but still just as good as the day that they were strung

cus there’s nothing but beauty in the passing of time
it’s constant like the change of a new moon in the sky

(and so we bought this older home, and… and… we moved in with seven children)

the cracks on the ceiling havе crawled as far as they will reach
and no mattеr where you step, the floor can’t help but creek
and all through the night you’ll hear the faucets drip (and drip)
and the breaker box in the bas-m-nt is always on the god d-mn fritz

there’s a light in the attic but i’ve been having my doubts
when they tell me they can see it from outside of the house

(and we’re still in that house today
and i just love it, and i just love it, and i just love it, and i just love it
one hundred years old, built in 1910)

this house ain’t perfect not even just a little bit
its got its cracks and broken windows its got plenty to fix
it worked the day it was built but been breaking down ever day since
so how come i don’t wanna leave now that it’s all gone to sh-t
cus there’s nothing but beauty in the passing of time
constant like the change of a new moon in the sky
but if only i could love it without leaving it behind
if only i didn’t start to see it’s beauty once it slipped out of my sight
