(it is the forest outside the beasts’s castle. the garden walls are covered in roses. father enters in front of the walls. he turns to go, but notices the roses on the walls.  thinking of the rose he promised to bring beauty, he reaches up and plucks one. as he does, the beast, roaring and furious, enters and confronts father. father falls to the ground at the sight of him and trembles with fear.)

[beast] (singing)
what’s this i see? treachery! blasphemy and outrage
sir, i caution you to death you’re very near!
you steal the only thing in life which i hold dear
oh criminal! for that i claim your life this day!

you’re not a man and neither am i
i am a beast, and you are a thief!
i could open your throat with one fl!ck of my finger!

[beast] (spoken)
but that would be mercy. i should make you linger

[father] (sung)
have pity sir, i’ve a family
their mother’s gone you see
if i’m to die, who’s to care for them?

[beast]
it matters not to me!

[beast, & (father)]
nothing can save you now (i am my family’s sustenance,)
your death at my hands is certain (without me they will die.)
families forget in time (if i’m to perish here at your hands,)
they will not remember you (must tell them goodbye.)
but if you sir would be a man (i need one week to arrange affairs,)
then face death with quiet (so they might live..
dignity, and calm (just grant me the time and i swear,)
stop all your pleading (that i will return.)

[beast] (yelling)
raise your head!
