[verse 1]
i’m sick of being held to these crazy double standards
no matter what you do, somebody is angered
everyone has an opinion and they all seem to matter
except your own as n0body ever asks you

i’m tired of chasing these unattainable ideals
images so photoshopped they don’t even look real
being told our top priority is to appeal
regardless of how we might think or feel

why are we teaching these warped lessons to our girls
like we have to be stick thin but men like women with curves
why don’t we teach them to understand their worth
and demand from the world only that which they deserve

why don’t we celebrate our diversity
instead of pulling each other down to find some brief relief
from constantly being told by our society
how to be a woman appropriately

[chorus]
you don’t have to define me by another
i’m not just somebody’s daughter, somebody’s sister, somebody’s lover
‘cause i’m a woman!
and woman is enough
[verse 2]
she’s just another woman quietly pushed aside
her story so familiar we’ve stopped being surprised
her accusations quickly labelled as lies
a swift journey from victimised to villified

every facet of her being closely scrutinised
every misplaced word loudly criticised
every action needing to be justified
publicly executed without being tried

it’s always “why didn’t she say anything?” until she speaks out
then attempts to silence her until she starts to shout
then label her hysterical or try to drown her out
anything to start planting that seed of doubt

poke holes in her story, brush over the gory
with swim times and glory, “they were both drunk therefore he
can’t be held accountable,” the excuses are bountiful
victim blaming even when proof seems insurmountable

it’s funny how he isn’t the only one at fault
when he is the only one that’s committed assault
but we keep letting the attacker write the narrative
if the situation were reversed, would the story be comparative?
would the victim still be the one berated?
would we still feel so calmly separated?
as her dignity’s violated and his motivation debated
why do you only feel you can relate if you’re related?

[chorus]
you don’t have to define me by another
i’m not just somebody’s daughter, somebody’s sister, somebody’s lover
‘cause i’m a woman!
and woman is enough

[verse 3]
i am a grown woman
i am my own woman
i’ll take your help but if i have to i’ll be a lone woman
i’m not just bossy, i strive to be the boss
i want my achievements to outshine my weight loss

i want you to see me for who i strive to be
for what i’m doing not what you want to see
i want to help expand this territory
so that the next generation can dream without boundaries

so they know that a woman can be gentle and kind
and still have a strong will, a strong mouth, heart and mind
that she can run a business or she can run a home
she can do both or neither but she’ll decide it on her own
[chorus]
you don’t have to define me by another
i’m not just somebody’s daughter, somebody’s sister, somebody’s lover
‘cause i’m a woman!
and woman is enough
