i don’t know whether to thank pictures
or whether i never want another taken
it seems we’re taking out our cameras
not when overcome by joy but when we’re vacant

at least to me it seems that
we’re scared of happiness
because we know that it leaves but
we cool that apprehension
with an aperture
frozen in a moment arm in arm
and tongue in cheek
we look so playful
but we were just sitting drinking
and somebody said “hey let’s get together come on lets take a picture!”

(now hey ho)
the summer’s gone
now you have no recollection of what happened at all
and you try with all these photographs
but you know deep inside that you weren’t really happy
and that’s not what really happened

we’ve gotten too good at lying to ourselves
maybe we’re scared to die or
objectively look at our lives

you know, i always knew i’d die someday
but thought in my case
they’d make an exception
it seems everything we do is in denial
of the truth that we will die
but for now the world is open ended
because right now we’re livin’ in it
and we have a device that i can capture
our whole universe with
and if i’m going to do it, i’m going to do it right
i’m watching you trying to take a perfect picture
you’re takin steps back trying to fit it all in a frame
so we can look at it later and know what we were seeing
but the moment never seems to be as perfect as that photograph
