letra de adelaide - matthew bryne
[verse 1]
i’m an older man by now with my sailing years behind me
in comfort i am settled with a house and family
but lately i am burdened by the memory of a lost love
the girl who won my heart when first i went to sea
my name is duncan black and new zealand i call home now
i left my native scotland as a boy to try my hand
to serve and seek adventure i did join the royal navy
and in 1947 our ship called to newfoundland
[verse 2]
granted time to step a-shore, with ship-mates i did wander
a few short summer days spent in the city by the sеa
where i becamе enchanted by the beauty of a young girl
sitting pretty as a picture in a park beneath a tree
i greeted this young maiden with respect and adoration
in a manner most becoming of lad in uniform
and how my heart did sing when she accepted my advances
on a summers day in st. john’s where my love for her was born
[verse 3]
each idle hour that we spent was in eachothers comp’ny
we would walk and talk together every day a-shore i stayed
and closer i had surely never felt to any other
for she was my first true love and her name was adelaide
on the final evening of my stay in st john’s harbour
we met beneath that tree where first upon her i did stray
to share a solemn promise, that our love would not be severed
oh my ship was bound for sailing by the breaking of the day
[verse 4]
my mind would never leave her in the days and once there after
from every port of call a loving letter i would pen
’till suddenly my words to her did not receive an answer
and i feared that this fair creature i would never see again
[instrumental]
and now a lifetime later i am writing out my story
to a newfoundland newspaper where perhaps i’ll catch an eye
of someone who can tell me what became of adelaide
i know not to whom i’m writing, but it might be worth a try
[verse 5]
doubtful at my plea would ever reach a correspondent
i was most astonished that a letter came to say
kind sir i do believe it is my sister that you speak of
though i’m sad to inform you that she has since passed away
it was barely two years after your short time in st. john’s harbour
when an illness took young addy, but she often spoke your name
having read your letter i am most obliged to tell you
that of all the love you felt for her, for you she did the same
[verse 6]
gracious i responded to the kindness of her brother
saddened though i am to hear of my first lovers fate
know that your kind letter sir has eased me of a burden
and please accept my sympathies though forty years too late
but now my heart can rest to know our story has an ending
after all these years from memories you would not fade
you’ll find and close the pendant that she gave me on the morning
when i sailed from st. john’s harbour where i left my adelaide
