the “marvin interlude,” when i heard it, before i even sang it, i already knew that i wanted it, that i wanted to reference a lot of the things that marvin did. i didn’t quite nail it. i just did it the mary j. blige way. but i knew how it felt to me when he was doing all of those notes layered over each other and making ’em do different things in different places just reminded me of something marvin gaye would sing over. and i’m a huge marvin gaye fan, and i just always wanted to sing like him on something. although i don’t sound like him on it, it just felt like it was something i should do on this interlude. and, i could feel it, it just feels so good. so maybe i nailed it in a feeling place, but not so much a technical, you know, music place. but i think i nailed it for me and my fans
