convergence of technology and 3d printing
this blog (the fifth of seven) examines 3d printing. other technological aspects will be covered in future posts
try projecting the future when a.i., robotics, vr, drones, and computation are all doubling, morphing, and recombining… you have an exciting (read: unexpected) future ahead of you. this year at my abundance 360 summit, i decided to investigate this notion in sessions dubbed “convergence catalysts.”
i enlisted the help of an industry expert for each technology to select their top 5 recent breakthroughs (2012–2015) and top 5 antic-p-ted breakthroughs (2016–2018). then we looked at the patterns that arose.information transformation services is endowing the clients with a stunning and impressive visual experience crafted by 3d modeling services . we are completely forted to offers our customers with a range of appealing 3d designs that are carefully crafted to meet with all type of requirements
context of 3d printing
avi reichental was my 3d printing guru at a360 this year
avi is the founder and ceo of xponentialworks, a company focused on monetizing exponential tech innovation and business model disruption through expert advising, venture financing, and incubation. avi was the ceo of 3d systems, the world’s largest publicly traded 3d printing company, for 12 years. avi, a great friend and great entrepreneur, is also a member of singularity university’s core faculty in additive manufacturing
before we begin, here is some additional information about 3d printing:
3d printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is the method of creating any three-dimensional object based on a digital file, layer by layer
one or more print heads extrude a little amount of material in exact positions in a 3d printer to produce items point by point from the bottom up
we can now 3d print in full colour and in over 250 different materials, including titanium, rubber, plastic, glass, ceramic, leathers, and even chocolate
3d printers can print practically anything, from jet engines to jewellery to houses and even medical implants, and can build incredibly complicated constructions of mixed materials
the entire production process is being transformed by 3d printing. customization and intricacy are provided at no cost, and large-scale bespoke manufacturing is not an issue
additive manufacturing also saves a significant amount of money, utilising as little as 10% of the raw materials used in traditional manufacturing and removing the need for inventories
finally, 3d printing dematerializes, demonetizes, and democratises manufacturing, transforming all of us into makers
if you or your customers do anything, 3d printing is on the verge of disrupting your industry and your business
2013–2015’s top 5 recent 3d printing breakthroughs
from 2012 to 2015, avi identified the following breakthroughs as essential to 3d printing
1. full-color 3d printing with over 250 different materials and composites
“we can now print in full colour, which means more than a million distinct colour combinations in a single print,” avi explains. we can also print on a variety of materials totaling 250. this has never been done before, and with the ability to print a plethora of new materials and combinations thereof, the creative possibilities are nearly limitless.”
2. mass customization of 3d printed medical gadgets
“we’ve observed an increase in the quantity of unique tailored medical equipment and parts,” avi says. not only are crucial ‘implants’ such as whole knee and hip replacement parts tailored to you, but the surgical instruments, jigs, fixtures, incision tools, and so on are also 3d printed to fit you. hearing aids are one example. for nearly eight years, these gadgets, each of which fits into a different shaped ear c-n-l, have been 3d printed.”
3. the explosion of metal 3d printers in the aerosp-ce and automotive industries heralds a new era of “mass complexity.”
we now have the capacity to print with over 20 different alloys. 3d printing jet and rocket engines are being developed by companies such as ge and sp-cex. planetary resources, my company, 3d prints pieces of our arkyd satellites
this capability enables billions of dollars in industrial 3d printing applications
4. high-speed 3d printing propels manufacturing on a grand scale
the importance of speed in 3d printing cannot be overstated. consumers would never use the technology if it took two days to print a little thing. if it just took two minutes, everyone would want one
“there have been enormous gains in speed,” avi adds. the prediction currently is that speed will increase 10x, 50x, or 100x in the next 5 years, rather than doubling every couple of years. there are a number of successful companies that are demonstrating today that they can reach convincing scale with 3d printing that is at least a hundred times faster than it is now.”
5. the democratisation of the means and talents for everybody to create and make
“we’ve witnessed a substantial democratisation of 3d printing technology over the last couple years,” avi explains. “this democratisation is about eliminating every user friction in the 3d printing process, beginning with complicated cad (computer-aided design) and 3d modelling. device and cloud connectivity, the ability to search and download photos, sophisticated search engines that search three-dimensional models, the capacity to price, share, source, and print, and so on. all of this reflects democratisation, making 3d printing accessible to the other 99 percent of the population, not just designers.”
this is the user interface moment for 3d printing – when it is simple and enjoyable for everyone to use
so, what can we expect in the near future?
top 5 3d printing breakthroughs expected in 2016–2018
avi’s predictions for the most interesting, disruptive breakthroughs in 3d printing technology over the next three years are as follows. these are the regions where entrepreneurs and investors should concentrate their efforts, as the business potential are enormous
1. personalized nutrition is now feasible thanks to a new breed of 3d printers
personalized nutrition and food are about to become quite exciting. “at the end of the day,” avi explains, “your home food printer will make a personalised nutrition bar based on your needs at the time, having the amount of proteins, carbs, minerals, and supplements needed at the time.”
next, we’ll see 3d printing in the pharmaceutical industry, where your medical pill will be printed (compound and manufactured) exactly for your needs that day
2. printed shoes and fabrics are causing havoc in the fashion, garment, and retail industries
fashion will be significantly impacted. “we will be able to print fully functional clothing and wearable devices using a combination of scanning, digitising, computing, sensing, active performance monitoring, and mixed materials,” avi says
shoes will be custom-made for you based on your posture, stance, and arch. accessories will be fully customisable and instantly printable. everything will be custom-made to fit your body
that morning, you’ll be able to see a gorgeous new dress developed in paris, buy it, and print it in your wardrobe to wear that evening
3. printing of finished mixed-material products (rubber, structure, wiring) — for example, electronics, automobiles, and residences…
“today, you can 3d print a toy truck with rubber tyres, a metal chassis, and a clear plastic or glass windshield all in one print. “the next step is to print a completely functional gadget with circuits, sensors, and logic,” avi explains
4. ‘factory in a box’ combines additive and subtractive manufacturing, giving 100x speeds. it will all be consolidated into boxes that will serve as the future factory.”
5. human organ and tissue 3d printing
researchers have proved clearly that basic organs and complicated tissues can now be 3d printed
these remarkable cells grow into a fully implantable, functional organ by extracting our own stem cells, multiplying them, and putting them onto collagen scaffolding of the desired organ
“in seven to ten years, we will be in the business of replacing parts and organs that our bodies would not reject, and then possibly we will have organs that were even better than the ones we were born with,” avi says
simultaneously, why not “print” a biosensor into your liver or heart to monitor its health and offer real-time data?
come with me
the ramifications of these convergent patterns are enormous
there has never been a more thrilling time in human history
