as celebrities are increasingly joining the fight to combat the coronavirus pandemic, lady gaga has arguably orchestrated the largest fund-raising effort with her upcoming virtual concert
from the lengthy list of performers and presenters to how to stream the virtual concert, here is everything you need to know about the “one world: together at home” global special
when is the “one world: together at home” virtual concert?
the two-hour global special will air on april 18 at 8 p.m
the show will kick off at 5pm pacific daylight time on sat-rday, april 18 in the us, which equates to 4am on sunday, april 19 here in the uae. each performer in the concert is being filmed separately, in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines
who is performing?
it’s a star-studded bill, with paul mccartney, stevie wonder, lady gaga, elton john, lizzo and coldplay’s chris martin on the line-up
the legendary alanis morissette, andrea bocelli, billie eilish and john legend are all also scheduled to perform. billie joe armstrong of green day, burna boy, finneas, j balvin, kacey musgraves, keith urban and maluma round out the musical acts set to treat viewers to a show
“the artist order will not be released ahead of time, be sure to tune in to make sure you don’t miss a moment,” the one world website says
the “one world: together at home” global special is a joint effort between the oscar-winning singer, the world health organization and global citizen to bring together some of today’s biggest musicians and celebrities to celebrate health-care workers on the frontline of the pandemic and to raise awareness for the who’s covid-19 solidarity response fund
lady gaga has already worked with both organizations to solicit donations from several global companies, raising $35 million for the fund
one world: together at home, the unprecedented all-remote benefit concert airing this sat-rday to show support for healthcare workers worldwide during the covid-19 pandemic, will air inside the virtual multiplayer game roblox. that’s in addition to the standard television broadcast channels carrying the event and the slew of streaming services and tech platforms also airing it on sat-rday
the event, which will feature appearances by celebrities and music performances, is designed to evoke the historic live aid benefit concert of 1985, and it’ll be co-hosted by jimmy fallon, jimmy kimmel, and stephen colbert. it’s organized by international advocacy group global citizen in support of the world health organization (who) and its covid-19 solidarity response fund. the fund is helping finance relief efforts around the world by supplying healthcare workers with medical equipment and personal protective gear and supporting other measures to fight the spread of the novel coronavirus
but to be clear, one world is not a fundraiser; rather, it is merely to raise awareness and celebrate healthcare workers through entertainment. apple, which is also streaming the event, is donating $10 million to the cause, however. and lady gaga, one of the key performers and coordinators for the event, is also directly involved in fundraising efforts for the who. so the concert will indirectly continue to help fund the covid-19 solidarity response fund
as for roblox, the roblox corporation says the event will be streamed through a virtual theater within the game starting sat-rday, april 18th at 2pm et. the company says it will air the entire eight-hour event over the course of the day, and on sunday it will repeat the two-hour tv portion that will air at 8pm et this sat-rday on abc, bell media, nbc, viacomcbs networks, and iheartmedia in north america
global citizen announced a second round of musicians and celebrities on april 14 that will be partic-p-ting in the virtual concert, including taylor swift, celine dion, shawn mendes, camila cabello, jennifer lopez, alicia keys, sam smith, usher, pharrell williams and oprah winfrey, among others
is the virtual concert a fund-raiser?
“the one world: together at home” global special is not actively requesting donations as lady gaga has already secured a $35 million donation for the world health organization’s covid-19 solidarity response fund
rather, the concert is meant to “tell the stories of and celebrate the frontline communities, health-care workers and their acts of kindness,” the singer said during an april 6 press conference
for those not interested in watching the traditional broadcast or doing so through roblox, a number of companies like facebook, twitch, and youtube are joining apple in streaming it online. amazon also says prime subscribers can watch through prime video, too
