[intro]
alright, hi! hi there
(so you wanted something educational, right?)
‘k. um… hi kids, hi!
so i was invited to sing you guys a little song
it’s a little story, you’re gonna learn a little something
it might be a little scary at some parts…
(how old are they again?) five…five?
yeah, they’ll be fine (x2) yeah. hi!
ok, uh, so are you guys ready?
ok, here we go
this is the story of old pompeii
where the ro—(sorry?)
(no, this is the only educational one i have)
no (x4) they’ll be fine, they’ll bе fine
no, there’s nothing to worry about. ok
start again, ok

[verse]
this is thе story of old pompeii
where the romans lived in peace and harmony
except for the slaves
they traded, farmed and sailed till one fateful day
in year 79 ad
mount vesuvius erupted, spitting dark clouds high above
burying cities in a pyroclastic surge
many try to hide in boathouses, and cling to the ones they love
but their whole plan was foiled when their skulls detonated
and their blood promptly boiled in the oven they’d created
so pray no volcano “lets off some steam”
or, in no time, you’ll combust or choke or fry
just run far and run fast and maybe scream
‘cause let’s be real, you’re probably going to die
the hot ash and gas together’s called a pyroclastic flow
it’s effects will take your breath away and blow your mind and head
rushing down at breakneck speeds into the streets below
it was hot enough to turn some yellow paint red
it makes more sense in context
its destructive power’s compared to 100k atomic bombs
and the cities it went through just disappeared
the geology’s completely changed once the cataclysm calms
now there’s a ton of buried corpses in the streets of pompeii
but the ground that vulcan warps is scaring everyone away
so pray no volcano has irritable bowels
or you’re likely to be smothered, explode, or bake
just run far and run fast, make manly howls
like: -manly howl-
‘cause living by volcanoes? big mistake
now granted, i should talk about the city of herculaneum
instead of wasting all your time with someone’s ruptured cranium
because it was hit first it had the worst pyroclast, but it was
fast enough to k!ll them in an instant
they might have had the time to flee but didn’t think they needed to
and proceeded to asphyxiate
though many today are still unsure about the cause of death
was heat still in play, or was it all just from the loss of breath
it’s great! no theory comes too late
and scientists debate to get the story straight
(ok, the fourth rhyme is a too bit much, isn’t it? ok, sorry.)
the bodies were left to decompose for sixteen hundred years
till some workmen found some artifacts that caused a stir
i couldn’t think of anything funny to say here
the flow had long since hardened and it held some souvenirs
like the sp-ces where the carcasses once were
then giuseppe fiorelli realized what he had to do
and he filled the empty cavities with plaster
now their casts are on display, showing you what could happen to you
-plernk-
all your plans should be laid, ‘cause you can’t ad-lib it
or you might be displayed at the next exhibit
so pray no volcano just needs to vent
-inhale-
or there might soon be a statue in your place
-lovely embellishment chord-
just run far and run fast and feel content
that tourists will cringe when they see your screaming face
[outro]
what, why are you crying? wh-
(why are they crying?)
stop it. why-
