rumors of earth’s grandeur reached the gods
who arrived with the king in countless hordes
the king built his palace in the mountains
and praised the maker with his lofty words

prometheus attended their festivities
careful to include them in his light
the gods adored his splendour in the day
while their envy turned to malice in the night

one day a herald came to call him
a summons to appear before the king
they commanded him to don the mask of darkness
and he shuddered at the thought of such a thing
