start off with a tune
on a guitar, in your bedroom
and you play to a couple of mates
they say that they like it
they start a band and try it
with some work it could sound really great
so we get all the gear
and we practice for a year
then we find all the songs are out of date

it takes us quite a while
to find a writing style
but the songs start to sound quite good
we get better every time
we drive the neighbors wild
just like we knew we should
we played a pub down the road
they said they liked us – and it showed
just like we knew it would

we save a bit of cash
and decide to make a splash
by recording in a flash studio
we find a place we like
there’s loads of effects and mics
and we all reckon that’s the place to go
we get in there at ten
start recording a song, and then
eight hours later it’s time for us to blow
we save up even harder
get some money from our father
and booked a studio for the following week
we start all over again
it gets to be a pain
the song never used to sound that weak
we argue about the sound
and the way the world goes round
i could really do with a drink

by the time the week is through
i feel like the inside of a shoe
there’s a lot about each other we don’t like
everyone wants to be loud
it’s the guitarist wants to play backwards
it’s the drums sound like an accident on a bike
and none of us like what we’ve done
we thought it was gonna be fun
we never thought we’d be making a mistake
