letra de john brown - heron
[verse 1]
john brown went off to war
to fight on a foreign shore
and his mother she sure was proud of him
well he looked so fine and tall
in his uniform and all
that his mother’s face, it broke into a grin
“oh son, you look so fine
i’m glad you’re a son of mine
it makes me proud to know you hold a gun”
“do what the captain says
lot’s of medals you will get
and we’ll put them on the wall when you come home”
as john’s train pulled out
his ma began to shout
tellin’ everyone in the neighbourhood
“that’s my son who’s about to go
he’s a soldier now, you know”
she made well sure the nеighbours understood
she got a lettеr once in a while
and her face broke into a smile
as she showed them to the people from next door
she bragged about her son
with his uniform and gun
and this thing that she called
“the good old-fashioned war
[refrain]
“lord, oh lord
good old-fashioned war”
[verse 2]
long time the letters did not come
did not come, did not come
they did not come for about nine months or more
’till the letter they finally came
said, “go down and meet the train
your soldier son and he’s a comin’ on home from war”
she got up and went right down
she looked up and all around
but she could not see her soldier son in sight
but as the people passed
she saw her son at last
when she did, she could hardly believe her eyes
his face was all shot up
and his hands were both blown off
and he wore a metal brace around his waist
he whispered kinda slow
in a voice she did not know
why, she could not even recognize his name
“oh, tell me my darlin’ son
pray tell me what they done?
how is it that you come to be this way?”
“don’t you remember, ma?
when i went off to war?
you thought it was the best thing that i could do”
“well i was on the battle ground
you were home and acting proud
but thank god you were not standing in my shoes”
“and i thought when i was there
lord, what am i doing here?
i’m trying to k!ll somebody or die trying”
“but the thing that scared most
was when my enemy came close
and i saw that his face was just like mine
[refrain]
“lord, oh lord!
just like mine!”
[verse 3]
“and through the rolling stink
i could not help but think
that i was nothing but a puppet in a play
“and through the rolling smoke
well, the string it finally broke
and a b00by trap on it blew my eyes away”
as he turned away to war
his ma was still in shock
seeing the metal brace that helped him stand
but as he turned to go
he called his mother close
and he dropped his medal down into her hand
[refrain]
lord, oh lord!
down into her hand
