i have found people seeking to dismiss him as a provincial poet
his position as a great poet has been questioned
it is true that although heems has been universally acknowledged
he is essentially a poet of queens
people may in a way be justified
in describing him as a provincial poet
they have nevertheless missed the essential poet in him
a poet, unlike a philosopher, is known by his attachment to particular things, to time and place
it is his provincialism that makes a poet
he tells of the transformation of a single tree
and it is [?] on the earth
heems’s province was his way into the world
in his love for humanity
he embraces the universal human
and by way of the image
he apprehends, in mr. illiad’s words
“the intersection of the timeless with time”
he loves, or actually thinks with the love of passionate humanity
