letra de guilt culture - heaven's emperor
[sample]
i was wondering i was brought up catholic since i was born and i brought my kids up catholic and um, we’re, you know, taught that god is a loving and forgiving god, and we’re also taught that if you commit suicide that you’re condemned to h-ll
that’s not what the church teaches
uh hold on a sec john yeah maybe just pause there for a moment jimmy has the church ever taught that
uh no the church doesn’t teach that, um; suicide, like other forms of taking innocent life, is gravely sinful, but that doesn’t mean everyone who commits suicide is going to go to h-ll, and in order for any sin to become mortal three conditions have to be satisifed
the first one is there has to be grave matter, and in the case of taking innocent life that is present; but there also has to be adequate knowledge of the sinful character of the act, and there has to be deliberate consent to it in spite of that knowledge
and so in the case of many people who commit suicide, either one of those second two conditions might not be there, and because either people, uh for example people raised in other cultures, may not have the idea that suicide is gravely sinful; and even people who have that idea may be under such psychological pressure that they dont have fully voluntary actions, and in that case the deliberate consent that’s needed for a sin to be mortal would not be present
so in, in the case of any particular suicide it might be the case that it wasn’t a mortal sin, it was a grave- it involved grave matter but it wasn’t a mortal sin because not all the conditions were needed
even if it was a mortal sin, one still can go to heaven if one repents, and it’s possible that in the last moments of life even though one has already taken an action that uh, that would lead to ones death and even if one did that in a way that it was a mortal sin one could still repent of the mortal sin in the last moments of life and end up going to heaven; and so, merely the fact that someone has committed suicide doesn’t mean that person’s going to go to h-ll
that’s great news cause i talked to our priests and then, he was under the opposite and, my son committed suicide-
oh, [?]
-and i’ve been struggling since uh november because uh, it’s hard to deal with
of course, of course
i would like to do two things, one is i’d like to ask all of the listeners to say a prayer for you and for your son, and for everyone who’s in this kind of situation, whether they’re people who are thinking about committing suicide or people who have, or their loved ones who’ve, uh been left behind after a suicide and having to deal with that; i’d like them to just pray for you and for your son and for your whole family and for everyone facing this issue
i’d also like to read you a passage from catechism of the catholic church, and you might want to show this to your priest, um because it may help him better be able to council other people who are facing this situation
the paragraph number in the catechism is 22:83, and ill repeat that again in a minute it’s 22:83 and what this paragraph says is “we should not despair, of the eternal salvation, of persons who’ve taken their own lives, by ways which are known to him alone, god can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance.”
and then it says “the church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.”
so the church itself prays for your son, and for everyone who has taken their own life, that’s part of the churches prayer; and so just once again this paragraph is 22:83, and to just briefly re-read it again it says…
