nicholas rowe was born in little barford, bedfordshire, educated at highgate and then at westminster school. in 1688 he became a king’s scholar, followed by his entrance into middle temple in 1691. a noted playwright, he is lauded for his translation of lucan, which samuel johnson called one of the greatest productions in english history. in 1715, he was appointed poet laureate by george i. he died on the 6th of december 1718 and was buried in wеstminster abbey
